{"id":1125,"date":"2013-03-10T01:16:43","date_gmt":"2013-03-09T14:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madox.net\/blog\/?p=1125"},"modified":"2013-03-10T01:16:43","modified_gmt":"2013-03-09T14:16:43","slug":"how-to-install-openwrt-on-a-tl-wr703n-that-came-with-dd-wrt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.madox.net\/blog\/2013\/03\/10\/how-to-install-openwrt-on-a-tl-wr703n-that-came-with-dd-wrt\/","title":{"rendered":"How to install OpenWRT on a TL-WR703N that came with DD-WRT"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK<\/h2>\n<p>I have only done this procedure once and sharing because of the lack of information on the web on how to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the sellers of the TL-WR703N are shipping the routers with DD-WRT pre-installed &#8211; some with a Chinese interface, some with an English interface.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, you need telnet or SSH access to the router as upgrading via the web interface will not work.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 1.17em;\">Step 1 :<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Get the OpenWRT image onto the router.<br \/>\ne.g.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><code>root@DD-WRT:\/tmp# wget http:\/\/192.168.1.142\/openwrt\/ar71xx\/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin<br \/>\nConnecting to 192.168.1.142 (192.168.1.142:80)<br \/>\nopenwrt-ar71xx-gener 100% |*******************************| 3840k 0:00:00 ETA<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Other methods can be found here :-\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.openwrt.org\/doc\/howto\/generic.sysupgrade\">http:\/\/wiki.openwrt.org\/doc\/howto\/generic.sysupgrade<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 2 :<\/h3>\n<p>The TRICK is that the partition names are different between OpenWRT and DD-WRT. \u00a0Whereas all OpenWRT instructions will tell you to write to the &#8216;<em>firmware<\/em>&#8216; partition, this does not exist on DD-WRT and you have to use the &#8216;<em>linux<\/em>&#8216; partition instead. \u00a0Use the &#8216;mtd&#8217; command as per the example below to write the OpenWRT image onto the router. \u00a0Note the &#8216;-r&#8217; argument will reboot the router as soon as the flash is complete. \u00a0(As usual, do not power off or disconnect during the flashing!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><code>root@DD-WRT:\/tmp# mtd -r write openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin linux<br \/>\nUnlocking linux ...<br \/>\nWriting from openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin to linux ...
