  1. Hi there,

I would like to promote your work/blog on the ponoko site.
Please send me an email if you are interested with bio pics etc..

(unless of course they are porn pics, hang on, even if they are your pornfolio, is that what you call your showreel?)

    cheers

  2. Greetings,

I was really intrigued and impressed by your iris design. My company is an integrated metal fabricator and we have product line aircraft ground support equipment, heat exchangers/combustion. (My web site is 10+ yrs out of date). I would be interested to make a metal prototype of the iris. It might even help me with testing part of the system on my heat exchanger. It would be a neat project. Would you be willing to share the design with me and collaborate on making a working unit? Thank you.

    Kind regards,

    Marc

  3. Nice design! Submit your design as an entry to the Alibre Design Contest by Feb 1 for a chance at $1000 !

Just email contest@alibre.com with some screen caps in an Alibre product and a brief description of the item.

  4. Hi,
I am Italian and I have a Mazda 3 with a 1.6 liter gasoline engine. The car is OK but burns a lot of fuel in my opinion.
Just 11 Km per liter of fuel !!! . I did read your article on the possibility to pick_uk and decode some data from the car CAN Bus.
I am very interesed about that and I would like to do it by myself as a homebrew work.
Could you please anticipate the interface schematics, the program used to show the data …etc , etc… ?
Thanks for having read this message !

  5. I am teaching a class on photography and would love to have an iris diaphragm to use as a visual aid How can I get one?

  6. Hi Madox,

I have been looking for someone with the skill and expertise to create a working Iris Diaphragm with Stargate in mind. I have bought Iris’s in the past and none come close to your work. Have you managed to produce your latest design? And how much does it cost to produce?

    Kind Regards
    Andrew

  7. hello john,
would you like to partner with me to take over the entire world and enslave the legions of zion with our army of mechanical androids, ready at your every bec and call!!!! arrrggghhhhhhhhh haahhahahaha

    1. Mr. Madox,

I can see you’re very talented, love the laptop stand.

I am curious though as to what Movies you’ve been in?

  8. Hi
Can the Iris be made in 1/8″ +\- steel, aprox. 12″-16″ dia. ?
I’m building a propane forge and this would be an elegant solution to the
need for access and heat control.
    Thanks,
    Michael

  9. Hi Madox,

I wonder if you would be interested in showing off some of your work at the National Manufacturing Week in Melbourne in May. We are attending the show with pp3dp showing off the UP printer there and it would be great if you could be there to.

    Regards
    Bruce Jackson

    1. Are you exhibiting with pp3dp? I’ll love to visit and wave Hi πŸ™‚ Let me know what booth you guys are in and I’ll see if I can come by πŸ™‚

      1. We are the AU distributors for pp3dp now.

Any chance that you could build me one of your “TI eZ430 Chronos Watch + Python Library + Remote Control” setup, or better using an Android phone as the gyro. Willing to pay.

        NMW Stand 3511

        Hope to meet up!

          1. Any chance I could get something before end of Jan as I have a couple of shows in Feb. I saw the android vids, they are awesome, would be great to use androids built in gyro.

Email me your phone number and I’ll give you a call.

  10. Hey man, not sure if you still monitor this site but I had a question for you. I am currently looking to monitor data from my RX8. I have successfully found the HS-CAN (PCM) pins on my OBD2 and found the MS-CAN(information display) pins as well. Not sure if you have any experience, but is there a way that I can read from HS and display on MS? I am looking to use the arduino with a canbus shield but it looks like the shield is only wired for the HS-CAN

  11. Hi!

I writing from Europe. I have a 2008 Mazda 5 1.8 gasoline (European) car. I decided to buy a OBD diagnostic cable, what I like to use on that car. I don’t know that this: OBDLink SX Scan Tool cable compatible or not?
Am I need a expensive softwate ScanTool and a Mazda Add-on?
Or can I read and del the fault codes with the free OBDWiz software?
What that protocol what this car use?

  12. Greetings,

Downloaded your Chumby Falconwing SD Card Image – Python Pygame with Drivers:
    https://code.google.com/p/madox/downloads/detail?name=madoximage.tar.bz2&can=2&q=

    madoximage.tar.bz2

Used dd from Ubuntu notebook to write it onto a 2gb microsd card and inserted it back into my Chumby One.

Starts to boot then it halts on the 2nd Madox screen showing the progress bar at about 2/3 of the way through.

Back in Ubuntu (card mounted) I’ve started making changes to the interfaces file (to no avail) and I notice that it appears to be a different distro with package mgmt tools. I also see ethernet devices labeled for Zaurus and HP pda (I own both). Is this distro more similar to openzaurus? I’m trying to use python/pygame (with screen input) and hope to attach a USB midi device to the Chumby.

    Any help would be appreciated..

    1. That’s fully booted. Unless you put code to change the screen, the boot progress splash doesn’t go away.

Do you have a serial cable to connect to the Chumby mainboard? I’ve got another image that starts up a WiFi hotspot but I may have broken the graphics drivers in that one…

      1. I’ve tried a dhcp and static IP one at a time for (wlan0, eth0, eth1) by editing the interfaces file while mounting the sdram from my linux box but I can’t ping the chumby when I re-insert the ram card and try to boot.

I’d have to order and modify a serial cable to go the other route but I’d rather just use a shell on the tiny LCD long enough to get networking and dropbear going then ssh in.

I assume that the login is root with no pw? I realize now that this is open embedded based..

        1. Madox,

Have you had any luck with pygame and the touch screen within your oe build? I’ve been playing around with ts_calibrate and updating /etc/pointercal with the output, but the screen seems reversed. My pygame app runs great on the chumby otherwise.

          John

          1. I think you’re missing…
            export SDL_MOUSEDRV=TSLIB
//Don’t ask me how long it took for me to figure this out

  13. Hello Madox,
I’m an alibre user and waht to build aero foils but can’t seem to get how to control the splines. If I set up a group of points then spline them the spline disassociates from the points. Any clues ojn building accurate splines for foils would be appreciated. By the way I’m an engineer and have a look at my site. I may be of use sometime. Currently I’m building in Rhino3d then importing into Alibre but want to do it all in the one environment. Cheers Peter S http://www.carbon-works.com.au

  14. Hey Madox,

I’m really interested in your Iris. Could you send me the 3d file or some more details on how it works? I’m willing to pay for it…

    Kr,

    Val

    1. Hi,

What were you thinking of making? My Iris design is not very practical as I was going for the ‘Stargate’ look. Try looking on thingiverse.com for more practical designs for shutter like mechanisms.

  15. Hi Madox,

This is simply a great blog with a lot of valuable and most importantly free information. Your blog goes into great details that most sites do not. Props to you, I would donate but my Paypal account is currently frozen. (Not to self do not access via a VPN from another country)

Anyways, I would be interested in talking to you more about the TP-Link 703 Wireless USB setup. A friend of mine were working on a project for our lab at Cal Poly University but were unable to get the router to work 100% properly. We may be interested in purchasing a few sample routers so we have a control to diagnose against.

    My email is *Edited*

Look forward to hearing from you.

  16. HI

I have installed openwrt 3.7.9.1 on my tl-wr703n. When I try to install kmod-rt2800-usb and similar, I can not do it. It doesnt appear in system/sofware/available packages

    Regards

  17. Heya Madox, Tamsyn here from the Adelaide Hackerspace. I’ve been following your posts with interest. I was looking for ‘opencv’ and ‘tl-wr703n’ and one of your videos popped up. Does that mean you’ve been experimenting? I’d really love to see what you’ve come up with, as I want to use it to make our hackerspace and venue a robotic pet, and facial recognition would be cool!

    Cheers,

    Tamsyn

  19. Where did you go madox? I was working parallel on some openwrt stuff so I check back here every now and then. I’m considering a revisit along that path. Would love to hear how you got on with the carambola. …and hi Tamsyn. I recognize you. πŸ˜‰

  20. Hello Madox. You can built openwrt image for wr720n V3 (china) with this
    kmod-usb2
    kmod-usb-core
    kmod-usb-storage
    kmod-fs-ext4
    kmod-scsi-core
    block-mount
    e2fsprogs
    fdisk

    ?
I can not install these packages through the repository, not enough memory.
Packages I need to add a USB flash drive to install additional packages.

  21. Hi Madox. I was looking at a website about a clothes drying rack and noticed that you were interested in pics of an older similar design. My mother had one about 60 years ago and the designer had claimed his as his own development. I have photos of similar wooden clothes racks if you are still interested. Most concertina racks open straight out but this one folds around. We had great fun with it as kids and used it for a tent frame. I can forward the photos to you if you are still interested.

  22. Hello Maddox,

I am compiled openwrt 12.09 from sources to tplink wr703N following wiki tutorial and after a few hours I got a firmware binary to download.
So far, so good. But I found that none of kernel modules of opkg from repository works. All tries relies on this kind of error:
    Collected errors:
    * satisfy_dependencies_for: Cannot satisfy the following dependencies for kmod-usb-storage:
    * kernel (= 3.3.8-1-d6597ebf6203328d3519ea3c3371a493) * kernel (= 3.3.8-1-d6597ebf6203328d3519ea3c3371a493) *
    * opkg_install_cmd: Cannot install package kmod-usb-storage.

How do you do to compile your image and still get opkg repository working?

    Thanks in advance.
    Fabio

    1. Hi Fabio, unfortunately you cannot use someone else’s repository if you compile your own kernel due to incompatibilities. If you’re able to make your own image, why now compile all that you need and bake it into the image? Alternatively compile your own packages?

  23. Hello, I found our page when I searched . I need some help and it looks like you know what you are doing when it comes to MAZDA rx8. I have one and converted the engine . I need the power steering to work. I am seeing that I have to write code to do this and I have no clue. Any help?

  24. I’m not a network expert. I did manage to flash my TP link with the firmware for a video streaming project. I’d like to re-purpose the TP link to connect an old Brother ?? 2040 USB printer to the house network. I’m sure it can be done. I’m just not sure of the steps to follow.

    Best Regards,
    Steve

  25. Hello Madox I have tried your 3d printer WR703n mod but I cant for the life of me get it to work wirelessly??? it will connect when the Ethernet cable is attached but wont if it is not attached??? PLease help if your monitoring.

    Thanks for the project!!!

  26. Wow, it is great that this thread is still going.

I cam back to this solution for another project.

Thanks a lot Madox and hope you keep this article up. (Had to use an Archive.org page because this page seamed like it wasn’t loading but could be my mobile.)

    All the Best,
    Taylor Amarel

    1. Yes I would actually πŸ™‚ Since I just bought a new Mazda CX-8 this month… πŸ™‚ how do I get my hands on one?
